Gunmen on Tuesday attacked the Police
Divisional Headquarters in Ngo, Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers
State, shooting sporadically into the station.
The incident, which occurred around
3.50am, was said to have cause tension within the area as the deafening
sound of gunshots jolted residents living close to the police divisional
headquarters.
It was gathered that the attack lasted
for about 10 minutes as the gunmen’s several shots shattered the windows
and some other objects within the premises of the police divisional
headquarters.
The state Police Public Relations
Officer, Mr. Ahmad Muhammad, who confirmed the incident, said no life
was lost, adding that more policemen had been deployed in the place.
A text message sent to our correspondent
read, “Our police station at Ngo, (Andoni Local Government Area) was in
the early hours of today (Tuesday) attacked by hoodlums. No life was
lost on either side.”
When contacted, the Caretaker Committee
Chairman of Andoni Local Government, Mr. Ere Victor, said the hoodlums
stormed the police divisional headquarters at about 4am and began to
shoot at the building.
Victor said that he made calls
to security agencies within the area with a view to rescuing the
situation, adding that about 150 mobile policemen raced to the place.
The CTC chairman said that some of
hoodlums came back later with dynamites, but were repelled by the mobile
policemen that were already on the ground.
“They (hoodlums) came in around 4am and
immediately I heard it, I made quick calls to security agencies close to
us in Andoni and we were able to mobilise about 150 policemen, who are
currently stationed within the police station and its surroundings.
“Surprisingly, the hoodlums came back
with dynamites, but with the combined efforts of the mobile policemen
and the military, they (gunmen) went back. As I speak with you, calm has
returned to the place and the security agents will be there for some
months,” he said.
Victor, however, disclosed that he had
imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on residents in the area, adding that
nobody was expected to be outside by 7pm
